Electronics Design Homepage

The aim of this guide is to highlight the
UK’s extensive commercial and academic
capabilities in the electronics systems
design sector. It includes an overview of
the current scene in the UK and goes on
to provide more detailed information about
developments in design technologies and
their use, details of opportunities for
collaborative research and advice on
support for business. The guide also lists
key commercial organisations and
academic institutions that comprise the
unique network that gives the UK industry
its great strength. Each entry gives a brief
description of activities and primary
contact points for follow-up discussions.

This guide is designed to be used by
companies and universities – both at
home and outside the UK – that may be
looking to develop their electronics
systems design interests in the UK. The
British Government is keen to promote
collaboration between UK companies and
universities and inward investors: the
Invest•UK organisation operates a
comprehensive service for investors
looking to establish facilities in the UK.

The UK has Europe’s largest semiconductor design industry, with about half the market in Application Specific Integrated Circuit design. It offers a large pool of hardware and software designers with relevant experience within equipment manufacturers, silicon vendors, fabless suppliers, IP providers, EDA tool vendors and independent design houses, as well as a large and well respected university structure for joint R&D and recruitment purposes. There is activity across all kinds of applications and devices, from system-on chip(SoC), digital signal processing (DSP) and analogue, to EDA tools and devices.

There are also major strengths in electronic manufacturing services and PCB fabrication.
The UK has much to offer potential
investors in other respects too. Britain’s
excellent transport and utilities infrastructure ensures fast and easy access to the European Union single market. Its workforce is both skilled and adaptable. There is a stable government that promotes a dynamic market
economy, and is committed to maintaining
a highly competitive business environment
that gives companies every incentive to
grow. These are just some of the reasons
why Britain has attracted some 40% of all
Japanese and US investment into Europe.

The DTI’s Communications and
Information Industries Directorate (CIID),
has produced this and similar guides to the
UK’s information storage, fibre optics and
flat panel displays industries. Electronic
files of these guides are available at
www.e-design.org.uk and www.photonics.org.uk.
